HABAKKUK’S PRAYER IS OURS! 20250814

Psalms 8:1 and 20:1-3.

My Shepherd directed me back into His green pastures in the parcel named Habakkuk, and the Mind of the Spirit met me in 3:2:

Habakkuk 3:2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

Picking up from yesterday’s devotional, I prayed for revival in the context of the prayer of Habakkuk (3:1).

Remember Habakkuk’s complaint and God’s answer (Habakkuk 1-2; see “Father’s Gentle Reproof,” 20250813). God’s answer made the prophet afraid (3:2). He prayed for revival to be given “in the midst of the years.” The years he spoke of refer to the time of judgment God declared and described in Habakkuk 2:2-20. The prophecy extends through the Times of the Gentiles, a period in prophecy that includes the days of His wrath upon His people (Luke 21:24). This prayer is ours: “O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy” (Habakkuk 3:2).

We live in the prophetic period called the “Times of the Gentiles,” a period of “wrath upon this people” (Luke 21:23). It is described as a time when God came from Teman (תֵּימָ֣ן  — Teman, from the “South” or the “right hand” when facing east).  The prophet reminisces about God’s past glorious transfer of “the land” of Canaan to Israel (Moses led Israel from Sinai (the wilderness of Paran), South of Canaan, intending to pass through Edom into Canaan, but was denied—See Numbers 20:14-21). So it’s interesting that Habakkuk uses this as the basis for his hope that God will restore the Land again to Israel. Prophetically, Christ, the second person of the Godhead, has His place at God’s right hand. He came from “Teman” (the “right hand”) to call Israel to repentance and restoration. But she refused.

The “horns coming out of his hand” and “the hiding of his power” (3:4) have application to our present circumstances. To Jesus has been given all power in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18), He is Prince over all the kings of the earth (Revelation 1:5), governing His kingdom from “Teman” — the right hand of the Majesty on High (Hebrews 8:1; see Matthew 22:44; Acts 2:34-35; 7:55-56; Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 13; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22; He presently holds His “horns” in His right hand—Revelaiton 1:16, 20; and comes He will be “sitting on the right hand of power,” Matthew 26:64).

Adding to our faith to lay hold of Habakkuk’s prayer, we have been grafted in (Romans 11:17-20).

Along the still waters, I prayed the prayer of Habakkuk, that we might receive the revival he sought and trust that God will “in wrath remember mercy.” Let us cast mountains into the sea (Habakkuk 3:10; Matthew 17:20), and may the Angel of the LORD “march through the land in indignation,” and “thresh the heathen in anger,” (Habakkuk 3:12; see Acts 12), and wound “the head out of the house of the wicked” (3:13; Luke 17:6 with Mark 8:24). Selah! (Habakkuk 3:3).

In other words, may we have a “revival” of the power and influence of the early church as displayed, for example, in Acts 12.

In the valley, kneeling in the shadow of His Cross, I heard the voice of the Shepherd call: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). He conquered sin and death on His Cross, and if we will conquer in His name and with His power, we must “follow Him.”

At the table, He anointed my head with His oil and filled my cup with His grace. We went forward into His field (Matthew 13:88; John 17:18) to labor together with God (1 Corinthians 3:9), goodness and mercy following (Psalm 23:5-6).

Praying for revival! 🙏
