Psalms 31:1-3a, and 8:1

My Shepherd thought I could use some extra rest last night. Forgot to set my alarm. So, it’s a super rushed morning. He did meet me in His green pastures and laid me down in Luke 14:8-11. Verse 10 caught my attention:

Luke 14:10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Here is a passage that rebukes pride and self-promotion that teaches a principle that, if followed, leads to being “worshiped” and “exalted”?

The word translated worship in Luke 14:10 is doxa, and means honor. It’s not the word reserved for the bowing of the knee in surrender to our King. The word translated exalted means to be lifted up.

Along the still waters, I thought about the place of honor and exaltation in our lives. Honorable men must be honored (Romans 13:7). But those who seek it for themselves, or demand it from others, are generally not among them. It’s something, like love, that cannot be taken and should never be demanded.

In the valley, Jesus called me into the path of honor and exaltation in His Kingdom: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

At the table, He anointed my head with His oil, a great honor, indeed. He filled my cup with His grace—imagine the King of kings and LORD of Lords deigning to serve me! Our honour is in Christ, and from Him, our exaltation is for Him and enjoyed in Him.
