“Come Thou Fount,” Psalms 8:1, and added, “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.”
My Shepherd met me in His green pastures, led me back to Luke 6, and laid me down in verses 47-19:
Luke 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
Luke 6:48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Luke 6:49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Many come to Him, fewer hear His sayings, and there are fewer still who do them. Jesus said, “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:14).
Jesus spoke of the “many” who would come to Him seeking entrance into His kingdom who will be rebuffed: “I never knew you: depart from me ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:21-23). Remember that we who name the name of Christ are commanded to “depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19). He followed this warning with the same lesson recorded in Luke 6:47-49, where He shows what distinguishes the many who come from the few who will enter (Matthew 7:24-27).
In verse 48, the Holy Spirit describes those who come, hear, and do!
The doer is like the builder who digs through the surface soil of the earth till he finds solid rock. He clears the space needed for his building, then lays the foundation upon that rock.
When the storms of life beat vehemently upon the house, it stands firm: “For it was founded upon a rock” (Luke 6:48).
In verse 49, Jesus describes the man who comes, and perhaps even hears, but does not do. Indeed, blessed are the ears that heard Jesus’ words (Matthew 13:16-17). Judas stood among those who heard these words. But Jesus said, “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Luke 11:27-28; see John 14:23; John 15:6-8).
The foolish builder is superficial, lays no foundation, and builds on the soil of the earth. When the storms of life beat on that house, it fell, and “the ruin of that house was great” (Luke 6:49).
Along the still waters, I pondered the application of this well-known lesson: whatever we do, we leave nothing enduring that is built upon shifting sands, only what is built on Christ, the Rock, will stand (1 Corinthians 10:4; see Deuteronomy 32:4, 15-31).
But the Spirit spoke to me by His word and said, not only will the building fall that is built on the sands of earth, but you must be careful also of the rock you choose: “For their rock is not our Rock” (Deuteronomy 32:31). There is rock, and there is the Rock—choose the Rock; that is, choose Christ (Matthew 16:15-18). The Spirit warns us of those who preach “another Jesus” (2 Corinthians 11:4).
If I will build a sure house, I must construct it upon the same foundation Jesus identified for the Father’s House: Christ, the Son of the Living GOD (Matthew 16:15-19).
In the valley, kneeling in the shadow of His Cross, where the Rock was smitten, and gave forth the rivers of the water of life (Exodus 17:6; John 7:38-39; 14:16; Luke 23:46), I heard Him bid me speak to the Rock and plead for the waters to flow once more (Numbers 20:8). As I obeyed His command, I remmbered that it was on this occasion that Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). In Luke’s account, the Spirit added daily: “If any many will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). I obeyed!
At the table, He anointed my head with His oil and filled my cup, mixing His sufficient grace to counter the evil sufficient for the day (Matthew 6:34; 2 Corinthians 12:9). Goodness and mercy attended as we walked into the harvest.
